A routine drive turned into a nightmare on the morning of March 5, claiming the life of an innocent six-month-old and leaving a family forever changed.

Six-month-old Levi Carpenter was properly secured in his child safety seat inside a white SUV when tragedy struck at the intersection of Buffalo Road and Howard Road around 10:15 a.m. A black SUV rear-ended the family’s vehicle with devastating force, trapping all three occupants inside.

Firefighters had to cut through the wreckage to free the family. Levi was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, but despite the urgent medical care, he succumbed to his injuries. His parents, Ashley and Matthew Carpenter, were both hospitalized with severe injuries — one in critical condition, the other serious — now left to recover without their baby boy.

The outpouring of community support was immediate. A GoFundMe created to assist the Carpenters quickly neared $130,000, helping cover hospital bills, rehabilitation costs, and funeral expenses for Levi. Strangers and friends alike came together in grief, rallying around a family facing an unimaginable loss.

In the aftermath, Gates Police Chief Robert Long requested the state’s Department of Transportation to review the intersection. Questions linger about what led to the crash and whether changes to the intersection could prevent future tragedies.
