The community of Shallowater is breathing a collective sigh of relief after Shallowater Independent School District released an official statement regarding a car accident involving Mustang basketball coach Jay Lusk and his family.
According to the statement, Coach Lusk, his wife, and their son were involved in a vehicle accident while returning home from San Antonio. Thankfully, all three members of the family are safe and are expected to make a full recovery. Officials also confirmed that the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash is expected to recover as well.
The incident came during an already emotional time for the Mustang basketball program. Players and coaching staff were preparing for their Regional Championship game, making the news particularly difficult for the team to process. Despite the shock and concern, the district expressed pride in the resilience shown by the student-athletes as they continue to support one another and focus on the task ahead.
In addition to keeping the Lusk family in their thoughts, the district also asked the community to pray for the Coach Paris family, who have also been affected during this challenging time. School officials emphasized that the well-being of families and loved ones far outweighs any outcome on the basketball court.
Shallowater ISD also extended gratitude to the many communities and organizations that have offered support, including school districts across Texas, the University Interscholastic League, and neighbors throughout West Texas. Special thanks were also given to the community of Brownfield for their compassion and kindness.
