CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa community is reeling with grief after the sudden and tragic passing of Panther football student-athlete Parker Sutherland, who died early Saturday morning.
Sutherland, a native of Iowa City and a freshman tight end for the Northern Iowa Panthers, appeared in four games during the 2025 season and was known for his athletic versatility and team-first spirit. Before joining UNI, he earned second-team all-state honors at Iowa City High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball.
The university confirmed Sutherland’s death in a heartfelt announcement Saturday morning. While the official cause has not been publicly released, reports indicate he suffered a medical emergency earlier in the week and was taken to a hospital, where he later passed away.
UNI President, athletics staff, teammates, and coaches expressed profound sorrow at the loss. “It is a heartbreaking day for our Panther Athletics family,” said Athletic Director Megan Franklin, noting the close bonds that define the UNI community. Head coach Todd Stepsis added, “Parker embodied everything we look for in a UNI Football Panther,” praising his character, humility, toughness, and genuine love for others.
Friends, classmates, and supporters have taken to social media to share memories and condolences, remembering Sutherland not only as a gifted athlete, but as a kind, humble teammate and friend who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Parker is survived by his parents, Adam and Jill Sutherland, and his sister, Georgia. His family has asked for privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
