CALHOUN COUNTY, Iowa — Heartbreak struck on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, when a bus carrying members of the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team overturned on Highway 4, claiming the life of 19-year-old Tater Johnson of Rapid City, South Dakota, and injuring 32 others. The accident has sent shockwaves through the college community, local residents, and families across the country.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 11:06 a.m. near the Twin Lakes area. Emergency calls reported that the college bus had left the roadway and rolled into a ditch. Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved. At the time, 33 individuals were on board, all of whom were accounted for following the crash.
First responders declared a Mass Casualty Incident due to the large number of injured passengers. A coordinated response involved local fire departments, EMS, law enforcement, and multiple medical helicopters.
