Tragic Loss: Justin Garza High Student Killed Crossing Highway 99 in Fresno

FRESNO, CA — The Fresno community is mourning the tragic death of 16-year-old Maxwell Thompson, a Justin Garza High School student, who was fatally struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross northbound Highway 99 on Thursday morning. The incident occurred just south of Herndon Avenue, leaving family, classmates, and neighbors heartbroken over the sudden loss of a young life.

According to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, Thompson ran from the east shoulder across multiple lanes toward the center divider when he was struck by a Toyota Tacoma traveling in the far-right lane. The impact propelled him back onto the shoulder. Emergency personnel and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers performed life-saving measures at the scene, but tragically, Thompson was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. CHP confirmed that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances, emphasizing the dangers of pedestrians on freeways.

“This is an incredibly tragic loss, especially involving someone so young,” said CHP Fresno Area Commander Capt. Ian Holguin. “Freeways are designed for high-speed vehicle travel and leave drivers with little to no time to react to unexpected hazards. Pedestrians on freeways are at extreme risk.”

Maxwell Thompson’s death has left the Justin Garza High community reeling. Teachers, classmates, and friends remember him as a bright, energetic young man whose life was full of promise. Local residents have expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy, calling attention to the importance of freeway safety and awareness.
