Nearly $300K Raised for Slain Nassau Officer’s Family as DWI Suspect Is Arraigned

An outpouring of community support has led to nearly $300,000 being raised for the family of Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa, who was killed in a devastating drunk-driving crash on Long Island. As of February 7, 2026, the GoFundMe campaign—launched by the Nassau County Police Hispanic Society—continues to grow, offering vital support to her grieving family.

The fundraiser was created to assist Espinosa’s husband, Officer Francisco Malaga, and their young daughter as they face funeral expenses and future financial needs. Titled “Honoring Police Officer Patricia Espinosa’s Legacy,” the campaign reflects the deep respect and love Espinosa inspired throughout her department and the wider community.

Espinosa, 42, died on January 31, 2026, after suffering fatal injuries in a predawn crash on Route 347 in St. James. Police say she was driving westbound when her vehicle was struck by a pickup truck allegedly driven by Matthew Smith, 20, of Hauppauge, who is accused of running a red light at high speed. Espinosa was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Smith was arraigned on February 6 in Suffolk County Court, pleading not guilty to a driving while intoxicated charge. Prosecutors allege he was driving recklessly, with speeds reaching up to 125 mph, and had a blood alcohol content of .20. Smith appeared in court in a wheelchair due to leg injuries from the crash. The case remains under investigation.

An Ecuadorian immigrant, Espinosa joined the Nassau County Police Department in 2017 after serving as a New York State corrections officer. She was a field training officer, mentor, and sergeant-at-arms for the Hispanic Society, widely admired for her infectious smile and dedication to community service, including work with Make-A-Wish.
