Fiery Solo Crash on Highway 17 Claims One Life in Los Gatos

Los Gatos, CA — A tragic solo-vehicle accident early Friday morning claimed the life of one driver after a Tesla crashed and burst into flames on Highway 17 near Lark Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on December 19, prompting a large emergency response and the temporary closure of the roadway.

CHP officials reported that the Tesla was traveling northbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car drifted off the roadway, plunged down an embankment, and caught fire upon impact. Flames quickly spread from the vehicle into nearby vegetation, creating a dangerous situation for first responders arriving at the scene.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Tesla at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Due to the severity of the crash and fire conditions, northbound lanes of Highway 17 just south of Lark Avenue were shut down for several hours as crews worked to extinguish the flames, secure the area, and begin the investigation. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes while the roadway remained closed.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation to determine what caused the vehicle to lose control. Factors such as speed, road conditions, mechanical issues, or impairment have not yet been confirmed.

Traffic safety remains a concern in Los Gatos. According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the town recorded 71 people killed or injured in traffic collisions in 2022, ranking 76th out of 90 comparable California cities for overall crash safety.
