Tragedy in Las Vegas: Father and 3-Year-Old Son Die After Overnight Hostage Standoff

A devastating hostage situation unfolded early Tuesday morning at a Las Vegas apartment complex, leaving a man and his 3-year-old son dead after a confrontation with police. Authorities identified the victims as Quinton Baker and his young son, Kentre Baker, following a chaotic and heartbreaking series of events involving the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

Police were called to the Parkside Villas Apartment Homes in the 8400 block of South Maryland Parkway near Wigwam Avenue at approximately 1:19 a.m. after reports of a man battering a woman and attempting to take a child from a residence. According to LVMPD Capt. Ryan Wiggins, officers arrived to find the suspect armed and holding the child hostage inside the apartment.

The situation quickly escalated. Investigators said Baker later exited the apartment while holding his son at gunpoint and began approaching officers. Despite repeated commands to drop his weapon, he refused to comply. As the suspect advanced toward police with the child still in his arms, officers discharged their firearms.

โ€œAt the same time,โ€ Wiggins said during a news briefing, โ€œthe suspect, while pointing his firearm in the direction of the juvenile, discharged his firearm.โ€ The gunfire struck the child during the exchange.

Emergency medical crews immediately rendered aid and rushed Kentre Baker to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Quinton Baker was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident, which LVMPD confirmed is the departmentโ€™s third officer-involved shooting of 2026. The childโ€™s mother later identified him to the media as 3-year-old Kentre.
