Two Brutal Cases, One Harsh Reality: When Violence Is Followed by Blame, Lies, and Justice Delayed

Two separate cases—spanning different states and circumstances—have drawn renewed attention to the ways violent crimes are committed, concealed, and initially misrepresented before the truth comes to light.

In October 2021, Ahkeyra Phylann Raysor, just 22 years old, was shot and killed with a shotgun inside a Charleston County home. Her killer, Xavier Smith, claimed the shooting was self-defense, alleging Ahkeyra threatened him. That story quickly unraveled. Investigators found evidence showing the shotgun had been deliberately positioned, directly contradicting Smith’s account. Prosecutors later made clear this was not an act of fear, but a calculated killing followed by an attempt to blame the victim. Smith was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison. While justice was served, Ahkeyra’s life could not be restored, and her case remains a painful example of how victims—especially young Black women—are often doubted even in death.

More recently, a chilling discovery unfolded in Detroit, Michigan. On March 11, 2025, police responding to a call found 60-year-old Dwayne Pinkston dead in a basement with severe neck trauma. Nearby, 68-year-old Barbara Jackson was found inside a plastic container submerged in liquid. Both deaths were ruled homicides caused by blunt force trauma.
