LAKEVILLE, Minnesota — The Lakeville community remains in shock after 24-year-old Jack Ball pleaded guilty on January 21, 2026 to the premeditated first-degree murder of his sister, 30-year-old Bethany Israel, and her unborn child. The brutal attack occurred on May 23, 2024, following a dinner the siblings shared. When Bethany failed to return home, her mother went to the residence and witnessed Ball fleeing the scene. Upon entering the home, she discovered a significant amount of blood and immediately alerted authorities.
Investigators described the crime scene as horrific, recovering dismembered body parts along with a saw, hatchet, and large knives used in the assault. Later that evening, a nearby Rosemount resident reported seeing Ball on a Ring security camera placing a body part on their front doorstep. Police eventually located him in a neighboring backyard, covered in blood and suffering from a self-inflicted neck wound.
A search of Ball’s journals revealed disturbing insights into his motives. He expressed intense anger over his sister’s pregnancy — she was approximately 18 weeks pregnant with a son the family intended to name Levy — writing that she was “no longer innocent.” Authorities say his writings indicate a premeditated and targeted intent to harm both Bethany and her unborn child.
The case has left family, friends, and the broader Minnesota community grappling with the unimaginable tragedy. Mental health experts and law enforcement have noted the importance of recognizing warning signs of extreme familial violence, as incidents like this, while rare, underscore the devastating potential of unchecked anger and obsessive behavior.
