Tragedy Strikes Humboldt Park: Father of Two, Andrew Garay, Killed in Targeted Shooting

CHICAGO, IL — The Humboldt Park neighborhood is in mourning after 30-year-old father Andrew Garay was tragically shot and killed in a senseless act of violence on the evening of January 23, 2026. The shooting, which took place on the 3500 block of West Wabansia Avenue, has left the community shaken, as Garay’s family, friends, and neighbors struggle to comprehend the loss of a man whose life was full of promise.

The night began like any other as Garay sat in his 2020 Nissan Murano, likely waiting for loved ones. Without warning, a gunman wearing a red hoodie approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots through the window, hitting Garay once in the head. The assailant then fled, disappearing into the nearby alleys. In those few, horrific moments, Garay’s life was tragically cut short.

Despite the swift response from Chicago Police and emergency medical personnel, Garay was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital. His death has sent ripples of grief through the Humboldt Park community, where he was known for his generosity, kind heart, and dedication to his family.

Garay’s loved ones remember him as a devoted father who always put others first. Described as the kind of man who would give his last to help someone in need, Garay’s legacy is one of selflessness and love. As family members grapple with the devastating loss, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Samantha Knutt to cover funeral costs and support the grieving family through this difficult time.
