San Bernardino, CA – Early Monday morning, a multi-vehicle collision on Cajon Boulevard near Highway 138 left at least one person seriously injured, authorities reported. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the crash occurred around 5:56 a.m., involving four vehicles, including a semi-truck.
Emergency responders had to extricate a trapped individual from one of the vehicles. The injured party was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment. CHP officials are actively investigating the crash to determine the cause and whether additional factors, such as speed or weather, contributed to the incident.
San Bernardino County continues to struggle with high traffic risks despite recent safety improvements. In 2024, the county recorded approximately 14,615 injuries or fatalities in vehicle collisions, marking a slight decline from prior years. However, the fatality rate of 17.22 deaths per 100,000 residents remains more than double that of larger Southern California counties like Los Angeles and San Diego, highlighting the elevated individual risk for drivers in less densely populated areas.
Trends in traffic safety show mixed progress. Pedestrian injuries and fatalities have decreased slightly in recent years, but the rate of cyclist victims has reached a 10-year high, with cyclists and pedestrians together accounting for 6% of all collisions between 2022 and 2024. Alcohol-involved incidents, pedestrian accidents, and total fatal collisions have historically ranked high in San Bernardino County, reflecting ongoing safety challenges.
