The tight-knit community of Vaucluse, Sydney, is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of 12-year-old Nico Antic, who tragically passed away after a shark attack on Sunday, January 22, 2026. Nico had been enjoying a carefree afternoon at Neilson Park, near Shark Beach, when the attack occurred. As he jumped off a rock face into the water, a suspected bull shark struck him. In a statement filled with sorrow, his parents, Lorena and Juan, shared the immense pain of losing their son. They described Nico as a lively, sports-loving child who brightened every room with his infectious smile and kind heart. His passion for life, and his generosity towards others, will be the enduring legacy his family carries with them as they navigate this unimaginable grief.
The Antic family expressed their gratitude to the first responders, medical teams, and the wider Sydney community, who have shown tremendous support during this painful time. The compassion and messages of comfort from friends, neighbors, and strangers alike have been a source of solace for the family.
