Clifton Family Mourns Beloved Dog Ophelia After Fatal Encounter with Off-Duty Officer

Clifton, NJ — A quiet neighborhood in Clifton has been left shaken and grieving after a beloved family dog, Ophelia, died following a tragic encounter with an off-duty police officer. The heartbreaking incident has sparked sorrow, questions, and an independent investigation as the community struggles to understand how a routine day ended in loss.

According to police, the officer was at his residence along North Avenue N when Ophelia entered his garage and disturbed trash bags near the door. Authorities state that the officer fired a shot after believing he was in danger. The incident occurred in a residential area where neighbors say pets often roam briefly between yards without prior issues.

Clifton’s police chief confirmed that an outside agency was immediately requested to investigate and that the local police department has stepped away from the case to ensure transparency. In a public statement, the chief expressed sympathy to Ophelia’s family, acknowledging that the loss of a pet can be deeply traumatic and emotionally devastating.

Ophelia had been part of the Steffens family since 2025 after being fostered and later adopted. Her owner described her as a loving companion and said the neighborhood has long been a place where dogs — including the officer’s own pets — have moved freely without conflict.

On the day of the incident, Ophelia was unintentionally left outside. A neighbor later alerted her owner, who rushed out only to find her dog already lying injured in the street. The officer later told the family that Ophelia had been inside his garage and appeared aggressive.
