Fallen Hero: Detroit Firefighter Patrick Trout Passes Away After Overnight Shift

DETROIT, MI – The Detroit community mourns the loss of Patrick Trout, a dedicated firefighter who passed away quietly in his sleep at the age of 47, just hours after completing an overnight shift protecting his city.

Trout, a 12-year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department, had responded to a fire during his final shift. Colleagues later revealed that he had sustained a head injury on scene. Despite the discomfort, he continued through the day, reporting a lingering headache. After returning home and resting, he never awoke.

At his funeral, Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms announced that Trout’s passing will be classified as a presumed line-of-duty loss, pending medical findings. The Detroit Fire Fighters Association confirmed that his death meets criteria for line-of-duty recognition, honoring the life of a man who gave so much to his city.

Those who served alongside Trout remembered him as a firefighter whose leadership was marked by kindness, humor, and selflessness. His Squad 4 family spoke of the small, personal moments they will miss most — especially his warm morning hugs that greeted colleagues at the start of each shift.

Before joining the fire department, Trout served his country as a U.S. Army Sergeant, earning a Purple Heart and completing multiple critical deployments worldwide. His commitment to service extended both abroad and at home, touching the lives of countless individuals along the way.
